HRM Homecare gears up to recruit 365 home carers in a year

Award-winning Scottish care at home company HRM Homecare Services is launching an ambitious recruitment drive that will see it take on 365 home carers in a year – the equivalent of one a day.

The HRM365 campaign will see the Ayrshire-headquartered company run by Managing Director Lynn Laughland – a recognised leader in specialist care at home provision in Scotland– more than double its workforce over the next 12 months.

The move comes as the care sector faces a severe shortage in the number of home carers, a trend which accelerated post-Brexit and during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, HRM Homecare has bucked this trend and increased its workforce by 20% – from 246 to 300 staff – over the pandemic and is experiencing growing demand for its care services.

Most of the new roles will be in frontline care at home services across Ayrshire, Falkirk, Glasgow, North and South Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, and East Dunbartonshire. However, Lynn also wants to speak to people interested in joining the highly-skilled operational side of her business as operations managers, service managers and care coordinators.

Lynn Laughland said: “2022 is shaping up to be the biggest 12 months in the 27-year history of HRM Homecare. We are experiencing significant growth, and as a result there are huge opportunities for people who would like to establish a career in care for themselves.”

Lynn believes that HRM Homecare has thrived as it is a business with a social conscience. Right at the beginning of the pandemic, Lynn and her team worked round the clock to make sure HRM Homecare continued to deliver its key objectives of providing high-quality care for those who are most vulnerable.

Throughout the pandemic they examined every part of the business and embraced the latest new digital health and care technologies to provide homecare staff with easier access to rotas and knowledge supports. This work ensured service users and their families were also able to digitally access the resources they needed when required. During the pandemic, HRM achieved the world’s most recognised quality management standard, ISO 9001: 2015.

This work was recognised in December 2021 by the Institute of Directors (IoD) Scotland, who named Lynn Laughland their inaugural Agility and Resilience Director of the Year.

Lynn said: “We have invested significantly in the quality of our services, and as a result we are experiencing a growing demand for them. Fundamentally, we want to help people improve their quality of life and live well in their own homes, but our aim is also to be first choice as an employer for people who want to work in social care.”

HRM Homecare also established innovative ways to encourage more young people to consider a long-term career in care. The company joined forces with youth charity the Prince’s Trust in Scotland. Together, they set up a brand new project that selected five young adults aged between 16 and 30 to be trained by HRM at a variety of its locations.

This training was not only free but comprehensive, focusing on the skillset and qualities needed to be a home carer as well as other roles such as human resources and quality control which exist in a company such as HRM Homecare.

Last month the five – Nickelle Murray, from Bellshill, Erin Lang, from Motherwell, Lauren McCombe, from Moodiesburn, Kayleigh Mackinlay, from Glasgow, and Nicola Scott, from Troon – graduated in a special ceremony at the Prince’s Trust’s Wolfson Centre in Glasgow.

Lynn said: “The project was a great example of a collaborative approach to solving the recruitment crisis in the care sector.

“Going forward, I’m hugely positive about the future of care in Scotland. Social care is the fourth major economic contributor to Scotland. In future its economic significance will rise substantially due to demographic challenges and the nations digital and industrial transformation.

“We want to be at the forefront of this growth in the sector and harness these future opportunities of digital health and care transformation to support people to live well in their own homes. Showcasing Scotland as a ‘world leader’ in high-quality care provision is as important as ensuring that organisations like HRM Homecare are sustainable growing organisations that provide people with choice and control about who supports them.”
